Marc did not start out as a woodworker. After college he went to work in biotech, and in 2004 he picked up woodworking as a hobby. It quickly took over every spare minute. He started building pieces for friends and neighbors, and the idea of doing it for a living took hold.

When Marc and Nicole moved from Southern California to Arizona, he spent time working with furniture maker David Marks, then launched his own business, Marc’s Wood Creations. He built commissions, taught classes out of his shop, and picked up teaching jobs at woodworking schools. He also worked a few days a week at a refinishing shop in Phoenix, which is where he learned a huge amount about finishing.

In November 2006 he started The Wood Whisperer, the first online video series about woodworking. The goal was simple and has not changed: teach you something or make you laugh, and ideally both. Twenty years later the channel has more than 1,300 videos and close to 900,000 YouTube subscribers.

In 2009 Marc and Nicole built the Guild, because a 15 minute video can show you a technique but it cannot walk you through a whole piece of furniture. Guild courses let you stand next to Marc for the entire build and ask questions along the way. More than 30,000 woodworkers have joined since.
