Roubo Giveaway
I think I’m going to like this new tradition of having a big giveaway for each build. For the Adirondack Chair Build, we gave away a new Festool RO90 sander! This time, we’re going the neanderthal route. After all, we ARE building a workbench right? So here is what’s up for grabs:
Benchcrafted Moxon Vise
One grand prize winner will receive Benchcrafted’s Moxon Vise kit. The Moxon Vise is a very cool add-on for your new bench, or any bench for that matter. Read more here!
Veritas Surface Clamp
Two runners up will receive a Veritas Surface Clamp, another great addition to your bench. You can use this little guy as a hold-down or as a clamp for your sliding deadman. Read more here!
Fine Print
To be eligible, all you need to do is build the Split-Top Roubo (or a close variation). Obviously, this project takes a long time to build so the winners won’t be selected until several months after the final video is released (official date will be announced later). Benches built prior to the Guild Build are not eligible. If you already purchased a Moxon kit and you are the winner, you will be reimbursed for your purchase. If you don’t plan on building a bench, there will always be other projects in the future with awesome prizes. Who loves ya?
Powermatic Snipe Reduction.
Seems obvious, but check the the indeed and out feed platforms are co-planer. If one is even a few thousandths high or low, snipe is inevitable.
Next check differential between blade cutting plane and the pressure roller. Each planer has a specification that is “normal” but like fine cars, sometimes they need fine tuning. I reduced the differential hight on mine by about .020″ and now NO snipe what so ever.
Good luck. Your milage will most certainly vary…

All that remains is a finish on the top. I’ve already started to use it on my next project!

Well done sir! Got your picture in the gallery already. π
Count me in — got it underway a month ago. The vises are scheduled to arrive next week.

I am also building a bench, not exactly Roubo, but I hope it counts. I will be using the end cap technique you showed soon. I have the base made and the top is nearly ready to attempt a flattening. I worked it with a plane but got quite a bit of tearout. I just got a 38″ drum sander and am contemplating using that to flatten and clean the surface.
The Roubo I’m building isn’t a split top and I’m going with the end vise screw that Jorgansen makes instead of Benchcrafted’s. Still count? Also, do pictures need to be posted somewhere as evidence when it’s complete? I think when mine is done I’m going to engrave “The Bo-hweemuth” into it. Yeah, it’s misspelled, but that’s how Steven Wright says it in Reservoir Dogs. It’ll make me giggle every time I go out to my shop.
Hey Jeremiah. Yes that would count. Honestly, anyone who builds a Roubo-ish workbench during this period would be eligible. And you can just send the picture to me as proof. I’ll add it to the gallery. Can’t wait to see “The Bo0hweemuth”!
Hey i have a question the there is a hole on the right front leg the top one , what is it for ?
For securing the end of a board using a holdfast. For instance, you might be doing some edge jointing with the left hand side of the board in the leg clamp, and the right side secured to the leg with a holdfast.
I started roubo bench that I delayed a year… That is.. got lumber and hardware all ready and was planning to joint the next day.. and then boom! announcement that next guild build is going to be workbench! I was so excited, what a holly right timing! and then noticed it will start Jan 2012. π another 4 months delay. haha. I’m sure it’s going to be worth waiting! I’ll be definitely building along count me in please!
By the way, I have same powermatic planer, mine makes quite a bit of snipe on the end of the board, end only though. How do you make it so that it is minimized? I always feed extra board to tailgate the last board, so far this eliminates the issue but I do have to always mill 1 more extra board.. Do we have any planer’s jumping coming soon?
Hey sl. Glad you’ll be joining the build! As for that planer, I have the same problem. And from my experience, there are just some planers that you won’t be able to eliminate all the snipe from. It is more than a little frustrating since I know there are planers out there that have no snipe whatsoever. So what is the magic combination of properties? Got me! I have implemented all the standard advice for removing snipe and I have even sat on the phone with Powermatic technical support for a while going through their troubleshooting procedure. All with no luck. So now I do one of two things: Leave my boards long so I can chop off the snipe or simply keep my boards a little thick and run them through the drum sander.
By the way handsome looking boy! Congrats!
He’s gonna become super master woodworker with dad like you, lucky! Roubo-Mini guild build coming by 2020? π
I know you won’t have time because of baby lol but baby related furniture like cradle and baby chair and stuff like that you will need eventually will be great guild projects for all pre-dad’s like me and alike. π or for people expecting grand sons/daughters.
Nice vice!
