Wall-Hanging Cabinet

Marc Spagnuolo

This series is really two projects in one. First, there is a beautiful solid wood version featuring classic dovetail case construction, frame & panel doors, a dovetailed drawer and knife hinges. Second, there is the plywood version constructed with pocket screws. The piece is adorned with an attractive shop-made molding and represents a more practical and cost-effective design. Regardless which version you build, your hard work will be rewarded with a classically elegant cabinet that would be at home in the bathroom, office, or even the shop!

Here's what we'll cover:

  1. Solid Case Construction

Constructing the outer case of our wall-hanging cabinet using through dovetails.

  2. Interior Joinery

Stopped dado, grooves, an exact-width dado jig, and some hand tool techniques, all associated with the internal joinery of our cabinet.

  3. Shelves, Hinges, & Assembly

Cutting the shelves, fixing an out of square case, installing knife hinges, and the case glueup.

  4. Door Frames

Its all about the door frames: mortises, grooves, and haunched tenons!

  5. Door Installation & Dovetail Fixes

Panel resawing, door-fitting, knife hinge installation, and dovetail fixes.

  6. Drawer Installation & Finishing Touches

Drawer construction, fitting, the door stop, and French cleats.

  7. The Finish

An unfiltered look at how the finishing step can sometimes throw you a few curve balls!

  8. Ply Version – Case Construction

The initial cutting, edge-banding, and pre-finishing of our plywood wall-hanging cabinet.

  9. Ply Version – Case Assembly & The Doors

We’ll use pocket screws to join our case and door frames, and then we’ll spend a good deal of time getting the perfect fit for our doors.

  10. Ply Version – Drawer, Molding, & Finishing Touches

Drawer construction, making your own molding, installing the doors, and final thoughts about pocket screw projects.

Reviews:

This was my introduction to real wood working. You think, cool… I’m going to make a neat looking cabinet that will hold some stuff. While that’s entirely true; what it’s really doing is teaching you skills. Making doors thst fit, joinery, dados, stopped dados. Each of the many skills you pick up here easily transfers to your next project. Right after this project I built a huge cabinet to store my tools in. All with the skills and confidence I picked up from making a littlr cabinet. Well worth it.

Simple but detailed project

This is an excellent project for for all skill levels, but I think anyone looking to improve their skills would find it especially fun and interesting. As woodworking projects go it has it all.. dovetails, mortise and tenon joinery, stopped dados, chisel work, doors and drawers.. and Marc does his usual excellent job of breaking it all down so it’s easy to understand and implement. The other nice thing about this project is it has a relatively low board foot requirement, so even if you use a nicer hardwood it won’t break the bank.

Maple Cabinet

Wow! This project was loaded with skill building and the end result has even veteran woodworkers slapping me on the back, “well done!”. Thanks Marc, great videos and instructions for any skill set.
