This month’s Guild member highlight is Charles Johnstone! We love the modifications he did to his gaming table! We are so happy you found the Guild!

Charles writes: This is my second Guild project and was a lot of fun. I learned a lot…I been woodworking for 1.5 years now. I modified the plans as follows:

Size reduced to 48″x48″ as requested by my youngest to fit into his apartment better.
Used dominos instead of mortise and tenons
Used cabinet grade solid core cherry ply for the playing surface and the top
*Made top in a single piece with solid cherry edging
I obtained a few tools for this project including a Veritas large shoulder plan and a Veritas bullnose plane. I ended up making the rabbit that the top fits in less than square by sanding, and these planes helped me square them up.

I also used Rubio Cherry Coral (Amazon Affiliate Link) and Rubio Sheen Plus (Amazon Affiliate Link) for the finish. My son helped mill the stock for the legs while he was home over Thanksgiving, so it was a father/son bonding moment too! We drove the table down to him in Atlanta from Winchester, VA.
He was blown away.

Thanks for the great build project. Next up are a Shaker Desk for my wife (based on the shaker table guild project) and the Morris Chair! I’m so happy to have found the Guild.
