SketchUp: Shop Drawings & Layout

Brian Benham
In this course, we will focus on learning the ins and outs of Layout to take our SketchUp models and turn them into presentations to present our work to clients and create shop drawings for us to use in the shop to build our projects.  Layout comes with your SketchUp Pro subscription.  If you are unfamiliar with Layout, you can think of it as a tool to Layout something like a magazine.  It will allow you to organize your drawings and add titles, pictures, annotations, and other descriptive text.  Then, export it as a PDF.
Prerequisite
For this course, is that you have a basic understanding of how to use SketchUp and be able to draw a basic piece of furniture.  If you need help with learning the basics, we have an Intro to Sketchup Course you might want to check out first. You will also need a copy of SketchUp Pro to take advantage of all this course has to offer.

  9. Intro Into Layout – Customize Your Toolbar

We will use the 2d drawing tools in layout to create a title block for your template, and import images

  11. Text Boxes in Layout

Text boxes work much the same as you would expect, as if you were using a word processor, with a few differences. In this video we will go over those differences

  12. Auto Text In Layout

Auto text is convenient as it allows you to set pre-programmed places in the document where you want the same text to show up.  For example, you may want your client’s name on the cover page, in the title block, and under the signature line.

  13. How to Control Viewports in Layout

The magic of viewports in Layout is that they stay connected to your SketchUp model, so if you make a change in your model, that change will update throughout the layout file, no more exporting screenshots and swapping images out to update your PDF.  It is all updated through the embedded viewport on that page.

  14. Dimension Tools In Layout

The dimension tools in Layout work similarly to those in SketchUp but have a few more advanced features and one drawback.

  15. Scrapbook with Auto Text

The coolest thing in the scrapbook is the auto-text enable features.  This feature allows you to add pre-drawn assets to your drawing and automatically display the scale of the drawing or the scene’s name as you saved it in SketchUp.

  16. Saving our Layout File as a Template

Now that we have done all the groundwork and pre-populated our test file, it is time to save it as a template so we can use it in our next project to create our shop drawings or client presentations.  Before saving it as our template, we want to ensure everything is dialed in.

How to export our sketchup file to layout to create our shop drawing and client presentations

About Your Instructor:

Brian began his career in the trades when he was 13; he took an entry-level position working in a steel fabrication shop for a bridge construction company.  Being the kid in the shop, the old grizzled welders took pride in teaching him how to weld, set up his work area to be safe and productive, build jigs for production, and how to properly lay out a workpiece from shop drawings.

In his mid 20’s, he worked as a project manager for a design remodel company designing and remodeling spaces for commercial and residential clients. The company had an in-house cabinet shop so they could design and build from the ground up anything they needed for a project. When Brian wasn’t on a job site, you could find him in the cabinet shop, working alongside a shop master, creating custom cabinets and built-ins.

All these years of designing and building things honed his skills to give him the confidence he needed to start his own business.  In 2010 Brian started his design-build firm, Benham Design Concepts, specializing in designing and building custom furniture. His drive to learn new things has helped his portfolio grow and attract clients who are looking for the unusual.

Brian has been making plans for the Wood Whisperer and the Wood Whisperer Guild for several years now and often provides consultation on TWW and Guild designs.
