Tiered Plant Stand

Marc Spagnuolo

Anyone that collects houseplants eventually runs into the same issue: how to display them. This tiered plant stand will be a dream come true for the plant lover in your life. It offers ample storage for various medium and small plants. The slat design allows light to easily pass through while also limiting the amount of water pooling if and when spills occur. The stand is lightweight, strong, and stylish and will complement any decor.

Dimensions: 36" W x 11 1/4" D x 51 3/4" H with vertical shelf spacing ranging from 22 3/4" at the tallest to 8" at the shortest.

Here's what we'll cover:

  1. Introduction

The Evolution of Plant Stand Design: From Flimsy to Fantastic

  2. WoodSelection and Milling

An overview of the material I’m using and why, as well as milling various parts down from rough stock.

  3. Notched Rails

Each shelf has notched rails on the sides that will hold our slats in position. The notches are cut at the table saw using a 1/4″ dado stack. Once the notches are cut, we can glue on our little add-on strips that create a ledge for the slats to rest on. Care should be taken […]

  4. Slats and Prefinishing

The slats are cut to size and pre-finished.

  5. Profiles

The profiles are cut in the lower shelf prior to assembly.

  6. Dowel Joinery and Shelf Assembly

The shelf frames are held together with a single dowel at each joint. After the joinery is cut we can proceed with shelf assembly.

  7. Profile Details and Pre-Finish

Profiles are added to the glued up shelves and the joinery areas are taped off for pre-finishing.

  8. Vertical Supports

The dados are cut into the vertical supports.

  9. Final Assembly

The stand comes to life with the final assembly.
